Abstract of the talk
Emulation as a concept for ‘long term preservation’ of digital data is actually not very common in cultural organizations as archives, libraries or museums. The platform dependency of most of the existing emulators guarantees no sustainability and the sophisticated handling of different emulation environments requires an elaborated knowledge in digital documentary practices.
The KEEP project aims to facilitate and stabilize the handling of emulation within these organizations. In this lecture the focus is on the Emulation Framework (EF), a fundamental part of KEEP. The EF stands for a simple way to give end-users in institutions the best suited emulation environment just by selecting a digital object from a digital archive. The EF will identify the digital object via format registries. The appropriate emulator starts automatically and – if needed for rendering – provides additional software, i.e. an obsolete text processor. There is no need for software configuration by the end-user any more. In this lecture the software will be presented, followed by a short introduction of the configuration system. The EF software is open source and is available for download from the Sourceforce website (http://sourceforge.net/projects/emuframework/).
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Winfried Bergmeyer
In 1995 he gained a PhD in history of art at the Philipps-Universität Marburg. After two years as scientific assistant at the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege of Saxony, he became project manager at LuraTech GmbH, a company specialized in data conversion, responsible for web projects of cultural organizations. After working as teacher for data processing at the REGIALOG-project, an advanced training for academics in museums, he became scientific assistant at the Institute for Museum Research, State Museums of Berlin, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, responsible for the cooperation with NESTOR, the german competence network for digital preservation. He was coordinator of the NESTOR working group media. Since 2009 he is in charge of the collection of the Computerspielemuseum Berlin and responsible for inventory and preservation of hard- and software. The Computerspielemuseum is member of the KEEP (Keeping Emulation Environments Portable) project, which is co-financed by the EU.
